L'histoire du mythique trawler Grand Banks débute sur les bords d'une île de Hong Kong. Deux frères, John et Whit Newton, poussés par leur paternel, montent un chantier de construction de bateaux en bois sur un des parking de l'usine familiale.
Les premières unités produites sont des commandes d'entrepreneurs locaux aisés, désirant acquérir des voiliers à quille longue ou bien des motoryachts en bois.
En 1962, le chantier déménage pour intégrer des locaux plus grands afin de permettre de répondre à une demande grandissante. L'entreprise familiale s'installe à Junk Bay, au nord de l'archipel.
En 1963, les deux frères décident d'abandonner les demandes personnalisées et de se lancer dans la production de série. Ils demandent à l'architecte Kenneth Smith de leur dessiner un bateau de croisière de 36 pieds en bois, à carène à déplacement et en motorisation diesel.
A son lancement, le premier de la série est baptisé "Spray" et rencontre un franc succès. Inspiré du design des chalutiers nord-américains, le Spray préfigure la philosophie des Grand Banks : une timonerie surélevée, des pavois hauts et des lignes de coque toutes en rondeurs. L'ensemble apporte un incroyable volume habitable, tout en arborant une ligne qui sort de l'ordinaire. De plus, la carène à déplacement possède un très bon comportement dans la mer formée, même si elle souffre parfois d'un roulis prononcé.
1124 exemplaires de ce 36 pieds vont être fabriqués, préfigurant l'attrait du marché pour ce type d'unité. En 1974, le chantier développe son savoir-faire dans la fabrication en polyester. Plus facile à mettre en œuvre qu'une construction conventionnelle en bois, le chantier gagne en productivité.
En 1975, American Marine est en faillite. La société est alors reprise par un pool d'investisseurs dirigé par Bob Livingstone, qui renomme le chantier Grand Banks Holdings, Ltd.
