The chain locker is at the extreme fore end immediately aft of which is substantial storage space. There is a bath room with three quarter length bath with shower over, wash hand basin and airing cupboard. Immediately aft of that is the master bedroom with space for a double bed and extensive fitted wardrobe, drawers and cupboards.
The living room/saloon amidships has an attractive built in oak desk, extensive adjustable book shelves, TV and Hi-Fi space with downleads from the self seeking satellite dish, and a multifuel stove which heats the central heating radiators and bathroom hot cylinder.
Immediately forward of the wheelhouse is the kitchen with a second hot water cylinder/calorifier, stainless steel double sink unit, space and plumbing for an automatic washing machine and refrigerator. There are extensive cupboards all round and space for a dining table. There are duplicate controls for the inverter and generator and an isolating key switch for the generator in the kitchen.
The wheelhouse has seating, a flag locker and other small storage lockers and a central heating radiator.
The aft cabin is still in the original style with attractive etched glass panelled doors. There is storage or wardrobe space immediately alongside the wheelhouse stairs part of which is currently occupied by a freezer. The cabin saloon has cupboards both sides and a multifuel stove which provides hot water and background heating in the engine room as well as serving the wheelhouse radiator. There is a small wash room off the saloon and a traditional Dutch-style bed space aft.
Actief’s hull was built of riveted steel construction and has been doubled throughout up to the water line with welded steel. The original riveted steel skipper’s cabin (or roef) structure remains. The cargo hold was converted to provide accommodation space in about 1977 with a welded steel roof and retaining as much as possible of the original hatch coamings. Great care was taken to follow the attractive original sheer of the hull. The wheelhouse has since been extended forward to the aft hatch coaming to provide access via a new staircase to the cabin. The upper part of the wheelhouse is built of hardwood and folds down to give a minimum air draft of 2.67m. Its removable roof incorporates VekaPlan insulation.
The ship is fully equipped for full time residential use or long term cruising in the UK and Europe. There is an Admiralty pattern anchor and chain cable and a separate kedge is carried on deck. A full set of appropriate weight and length mooring lines suitable for a ship of this size and weight are on board as are suitable boat shafts, hooks and so on. There is a full set of appropriate standard navigation lamps including the riding light.
There is an intercom between the wheelhouse and foredeck so that the skipper can loudly express her opinion of the deck hand’s abilities and he can answer back. There is an intercom fitted between the wheelhouse and cabin accommodation.
The engine room contains separate starter and domestic service batteries, low voltage fuse box and a consumer unit which splits high and low demand 230v AC mains circuits. These are supplied by land line, inverter or generator as appropriate. The inverter/charger is a Victron 24 volt 1600 watt unit and the generator is a Kohler 8kEFOZ 8KVA 36 amp 1,500RPM machine. The inverter will supply domestic power to lower consumption units immediately on interruption of the generator or land line supply so that computers and timers will continue to operate unaffected. Both the generator and inverter can be controlled from the kitchen.
A JLS 85cm dish self-seeking satellite receiver system is fitted to the conversion cabin roof with downleads and control boxes installed in the living room.
A mast head wind indicator displays in the wheelhouse where there are also two DSC VHF radio transmitters, a Garmin GPS receiver, Class A AIS transmitter/receiver, magnet and electronic compasses.
Actief's main engine is a DAF DD575 marinised 6 cylinder 5.75 litre diesel which was installed in about 1977. It was completely professionally rebuilt in October 2009 by Edeco Power Systems with many new parts fitted. It is raw water cooled via a heat exchanger and is fitted with 24 volt alternator and starter motor. Fuel is supplied from the tanks by a twin supply line with filters and aglomerators which can be cleaned or changed whilst the engine is running.
Drive is through a Newage PRM gearbox and universal-jointed shaft.
There is a mast-head radar reflector. The Class A AIS transmitter is fitted in the wheelhouse. There are the appropriate life buoys, lanyard and light. Up to date fire extinguishers and fire blanket are provided to comply with both UK and European regulations.
